Key Management

Practices and systems for securely generating, distributing, storing, rotating, and destroying cryptographic keys.

Definition

Key management covers the entire key lifecycle and is often the weakest point of a cryptosystem. Guidance is provided by NIST SP 800-57. Controls include HSMs, separation of duties, split knowledge, rotation schedules, escrow policies, and secure destruction.

Example

An organization uses AWS KMS with key policies, CloudTrail logging, and annual automatic rotation.

Exam tip

When encryption fails in a scenario, look for key management flaws such as keys stored with the data.
