Junction Table

An associative table that resolves a many-to-many relationship by holding foreign keys to both related tables.

Definition

Also called a link, associative or cross-reference table, a junction table usually has a composite primary key made of the two foreign keys. It can also store attributes of the relationship itself, such as an enrollment date or quantity.

Example

OrderLines(OrderID, ProductID, Quantity) links Orders and Products.

Exam tip

Attributes that describe the relationship, not either entity, belong in the junction table.
