Jump Server

Hardened intermediary host used to access and manage devices in a secure zone.

Definition

Also called a jump box or bastion host, a jump server is the only allowed path into a sensitive network for administrators. It concentrates monitoring, MFA, and session recording at one point. Cloud equivalents include Azure Bastion and AWS Systems Manager Session Manager.

Example

Admins RDP to a jump server with MFA, then connect to production servers that block direct access.

Exam tip

Jump servers centralize and audit administrative access; harden them heavily.
