Isolation (ACID)

The ACID property that concurrent transactions do not see each other's intermediate, uncommitted changes.

Definition

Isolation is achieved with locking or multiversioning and is tunable through isolation levels that trade correctness for concurrency. Full isolation (serializable) makes concurrent transactions behave as if they ran one after another.

Exam tip

Isolation questions usually lead to isolation levels and read anomalies such as dirty or phantom reads.
