Interactive Application Security Testing (IAST)

Security testing that uses agents instrumented inside a running application to observe code execution and data flow during functional tests.

Definition

IAST combines elements of SAST and DAST: the agent sees both the incoming request and the code path, so it reports vulnerabilities with exact source lines and few false positives. Coverage depends on how much of the application the tests exercise, and agents support specific languages and runtimes.

Example

An IAST agent in the QA environment flags a SQL injection when an automated test hits an endpoint that concatenates input into a query.

Exam tip

IAST runs during testing (not production) and needs an agent; RASP runs in production and blocks attacks.
