Information Rights Management (IRM)

Technology that applies persistent usage restrictions to documents and emails wherever they travel.

Definition

IRM (also called enterprise digital rights management) encrypts content and embeds policies controlling who can open, edit, print, copy, or forward it. Protection travels with the file even outside the organization. Microsoft Purview Information Protection (formerly Azure Information Protection) is a common implementation.

Example

A board report labeled Highly Confidential cannot be printed or forwarded, even after being emailed to an outside lawyer.

Exam tip

IRM protects data after it leaves your control; DLP prevents it from leaving in the first place.
