Identity Pre-Shared Key (iPSK)

A WLAN design in which each user or device group has its own passphrase on the same SSID.

Definition

Also called private PSK (PPSK) or multi-PSK (MPSK), it lets IoT and headless devices use simple PSK authentication while allowing per-device revocation and VLAN assignment. Keys are stored locally or returned by RADIUS after MAC authentication. Cisco calls it iPSK, Aruba MPSK, and Mist and Meraki use PPSK or IPSK.

Example

Each smart TV gets its own passphrase that maps it to the IoT VLAN.

Exam tip

iPSK solves the shared-key revocation problem for devices that cannot do 802.1X.
