Gray-Box Testing

Testing with partial knowledge of the target, such as user-level credentials or limited documentation; CompTIA's partially known environment.

Definition

Gray-box testing balances realism and efficiency by giving testers some information, often a standard user account, which simulates an insider or a compromised user. It is the most common approach for web application and internal network tests. It lets testers focus on authorization flaws and privilege escalation.

Example

A tester receives a low-privilege account on a web portal and tries to access other customers' data.

Exam tip

Gray box is the answer when the scenario simulates an attacker who has already phished a standard user's credentials.
