GraphQL Introspection

A GraphQL feature that lets clients query the full schema, which can disclose sensitive types and operations in production.

Definition

Introspection is useful during development but in production can reveal hidden mutations and fields to attackers. Many teams disable it in production or restrict it to authenticated developers, and still enforce authorization per resolver.

Example

Disabling introspection on the public GraphQL endpoint while keeping it in staging.

Exam tip

Disabling introspection is hardening, not authorization; resolvers still need access checks.
