GitOps

An operating model where desired infrastructure and app state is stored declaratively in Git and automatically reconciled to the live environment.

Definition

In GitOps, Git is the single source of truth, changes are made via pull requests, and an agent such as Argo CD or Flux continuously pulls the desired state and corrects drift. This provides audit history, easy rollback via git revert, and no direct cluster credentials in CI.

Example

Merging a pull request that changes an image tag in a Kustomize overlay causes Argo CD to roll out the new version.

Exam tip

GitOps is pull-based reconciliation; a CI job that runs kubectl apply is push-based and not strictly GitOps.
