GITHUB_TOKEN

An automatically generated, short-lived token that GitHub Actions provides to each workflow run for authenticating to the GitHub API.

Definition

The token is scoped to the repository and expires when the job ends. Its permissions should be restricted with the permissions key following least privilege. Events created with it do not trigger new workflow runs (except workflow_dispatch and repository_dispatch).

Example

permissions: { contents: read, pull-requests: write }

Exam tip

Set least-privilege permissions; use a GitHub App or PAT only when you need cross-repo access.
