Gigabit Ethernet (GbE)

Ethernet at 1000 Mbps, defined in 802.3z (fiber) and 802.3ab (copper).

Definition

Gigabit Ethernet is the standard access speed for desktops and many servers. Copper 1000BASE-T uses all four pairs of Cat 5e or better, while fiber variants include 1000BASE-SX on multimode and 1000BASE-LX on single-mode or multimode.

Example

A laptop docking station connects at 1 Gbps via 1000BASE-T.

Exam tip

Gigabit over copper requires all four pairs; a cable with a broken pair may drop to 100 Mbps.
