Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)

A generative model in which a generator and a discriminator are trained against each other.

Definition

The generator creates synthetic samples while the discriminator tries to tell real from fake; competition drives the generator toward realistic outputs. GANs produce sharp images but can be unstable and suffer mode collapse. Diffusion models have largely overtaken them for image generation.

Exam tip

Generator vs. discriminator is the defining GAN concept.
