Feature Flag

A runtime switch that enables or disables functionality without deploying new code, also called a feature toggle.

Definition

Feature flags decouple deployment from release, enabling trunk-based development, dark launches, gradual rollouts to user segments, A/B tests, and instant kill switches. Stale flags must be removed to avoid technical debt.

Example

A new checkout flow is deployed disabled and enabled for 10% of users via Azure App Configuration feature management.

Exam tip

Feature flags separate deploy from release; they are the answer when the business wants to turn a feature off without redeploying.
