Eventual Consistency

A model in which replicas converge to the same value if no new updates occur, but reads may temporarily return stale data.

Definition

Eventual consistency gives low latency and high availability across regions. It is the weakest of Cosmos DB's five consistency levels. Applications must tolerate reading old values shortly after a write.

Example

A social media like count briefly differs between regions.

Exam tip

If a scenario tolerates stale reads in exchange for availability and the lowest latency, choose eventual consistency.
