Engineering Workstation (EWS)

A computer used by control engineers to configure, program and troubleshoot PLCs, DCS controllers and other ICS devices.

Definition

Because it holds project files and programming software with authority to change control logic, the EWS is a high-value target, as in Stuxnet and TRITON. It should be hardened, access-controlled, monitored and not used for email or web browsing.

Example

An engineer downloads new ladder logic to a PLC from the EWS during a maintenance window.

Exam tip

Compromise of the EWS can lead directly to unsafe process changes.
