Edge Location

Provider point of presence near end users used to cache content and terminate connections for CDN and DNS services.

Definition

Edge locations (points of presence) are sites, far more numerous than regions, where services such as Amazon CloudFront, Route 53, AWS Global Accelerator and AWS WAF run close to users. They reduce latency by caching content and entering traffic onto the provider's private backbone.

Example

A user in Sydney receives cached images from a local CloudFront edge location instead of from an origin in Virginia.

Exam tip

Edge locations are not regions or AZs; you cannot launch EC2 instances in them.
