EBS Snapshot

Point-in-time, incremental backup of an EBS volume stored durably by AWS and usable to create new volumes in any AZ.

Definition

EBS snapshots capture only blocks changed since the previous snapshot, and are stored regionally. They can be copied across regions and accounts, used to create AMIs, encrypted during copy, archived to a lower-cost tier, and protected from deletion with Recycle Bin rules. Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager or AWS Backup automates creation and retention.

Example

A nightly AWS Backup plan snapshots all volumes tagged Backup=daily and copies them to a second region.

Exam tip

Snapshots are how you move a volume across AZs or regions and how you encrypt an existing unencrypted volume (snapshot, copy with encryption, restore).
