Dynamic NAT

NAT that maps inside addresses to public addresses drawn from a pool on a first-come, first-served, one-to-one basis.

Definition

Each active inside host consumes one public address from the pool until its translation times out. If the pool is exhausted, additional hosts cannot reach outside networks. It is less common than PAT because it does not multiply public address capacity.

Example

Ten public addresses in a pool serve ten simultaneous internal users with dynamic NAT.

Exam tip

Dynamic NAT is still one-to-one; when the pool runs out, new users fail. PAT solves this.
