Dynamic Microphone

A rugged microphone that generates signal by moving a coil within a magnetic field, needing no external power.

Definition

Dynamic microphones handle high sound pressure levels, resist moisture and rough handling, and are common for handheld vocals and loud instruments. They are less sensitive and less detailed at high frequencies than condensers. Many are cardioid or supercardioid to reduce feedback.

Example

A presenter uses a handheld dynamic microphone at a podium in a reverberant hall.

Exam tip

Dynamic microphones do not need phantom power and handle high SPL well.
