Domain Validation Certificate (DV)

Certificate issued after the CA verifies only that the requester controls the domain.

Definition

DV certificates are validated through DNS records, HTTP files, or email to domain contacts, and can be issued in minutes via ACME. They provide the same encryption strength as OV or EV certificates but no verified organization identity. Most certificates on the web today are DV.

Example

Let's Encrypt issues a DV certificate after the server answers an HTTP-01 challenge.

Exam tip

Validation level affects identity assurance, not encryption strength.
