Disinformation

Deliberately false or misleading information spread to deceive, often as part of an influence campaign.

Definition

Disinformation differs from misinformation, which is false but spread without intent to deceive. Nation-states and other actors use social media, fake news sites and bots to shape opinion or damage reputations. Security+ covers it under influence campaigns and misinformation/disinformation.

Example

A coordinated bot network spreading fabricated claims about a company's product safety.

Exam tip

Know the intent difference: disinformation is deliberate, misinformation is not.
