DHCP Scope

The range of IP addresses and associated settings a DHCP server can assign on a particular subnet.

Definition

A scope defines the address pool, subnet mask, lease duration and options such as gateway and DNS servers. When the scope is exhausted, new clients cannot get addresses and fall back to APIPA.

Example

A scope for 10.1.20.0/24 hands out .100 to .250.

Exam tip

Scope exhaustion = new clients get 169.254.x.x while existing clients work.
