Detonation

Executing a suspicious file or opening a URL in a sandbox to trigger and observe any malicious behavior.

Definition

Detonation produces behavioral evidence and indicators of compromise that can be turned into blocks and detections. Many SOAR playbooks automatically detonate email attachments and URLs reported by users. Results feed verdicts used by firewalls and endpoint agents.

Example

A SOAR playbook detonates a reported phishing link and extracts the final landing domain.

Exam tip

Detonation is part of analysis, not containment.
