Deterrent Control

Control that discourages potential attackers or violators from attempting an action.

Definition

Deterrent controls work psychologically, such as warning banners, visible cameras, guard presence, and published sanctions. They do not physically prevent an action. They are often combined with preventive and detective controls.

Example

A login banner stating that unauthorized access will be prosecuted deters casual misuse.

Exam tip

A visible camera can be both deterrent and detective; read the scenario carefully.
