dd

A Unix command-line utility used to create raw bit-for-bit copies of disks and partitions.

Definition

dd copies data block by block and is commonly used to create raw forensic images. Forensic variants such as dcfldd and dc3dd add hashing, progress and logging. Swapping if and of by mistake can overwrite evidence.

Example

dd if=/dev/sda of=/mnt/evidence/disk.img bs=4M conv=noerror,sync

Exam tip

dd creates raw images; verify with a hash afterwards.
