Data Custodian

Role responsible for implementing and maintaining the controls that protect data on behalf of the data owner.

Definition

Custodians, often IT or database administrators, perform backups, apply access controls, maintain integrity, and implement retention per the owner's requirements. Data stewards focus on data quality and business meaning. Custodians do not set classification or approve access policy.

Example

A DBA restores a database and enforces column encryption specified by the data owner.

Exam tip

Custodian = implements; owner = decides.
