Dangling DNS Record

A DNS record that points to an IP address or cloud resource no longer owned or controlled by the organization.

Definition

Dangling records are the precondition for subdomain takeover and can also send traffic to whoever later receives a released cloud IP. Asset inventory and automated DNS hygiene checks detect them.

Example

A CNAME points to a storage bucket name that was deleted last year.

Exam tip

Prevention is lifecycle management of DNS alongside cloud resources.
