Counter Mode with CBC-MAC Protocol (CCMP)

The AES-based 802.11i encryption protocol using CTR mode for confidentiality and CBC-MAC for integrity.

Definition

CCMP uses AES with a 128-bit key, counter mode encryption, and a CBC-MAC message integrity code, plus packet numbers for replay protection. It is the mandatory cipher for WPA2 and is used by WPA3-Personal. It adds 16 bytes of overhead per frame.

Exam tip

WPA2 = AES-CCMP (128-bit).
