Control Self-Assessment (CSA)

Process in which management and staff evaluate the effectiveness of their own controls.

Definition

CSA uses workshops, questionnaires, or surveys facilitated by audit or risk functions to engage process owners. It increases control awareness and ownership but is less independent than an audit. It complements, not replaces, the audit function.

Example

Department heads complete quarterly control self-assessments in the GRC platform.

Exam tip

CSA shifts control responsibility to line management but does not replace internal audit.
