Context Window

The maximum number of tokens (input plus output) a model can consider in a single request.

Definition

The context window bounds how much instruction, conversation history, retrieved documents and generated output fit at once. Windows now range from a few thousand to one million or more tokens. Longer contexts increase cost and latency, and models may use mid-context information less reliably.

Example

A 200,000-token window can hold several hundred pages of text.

Exam tip

If documents exceed the context window, use chunking and RAG or summarization rather than a bigger prompt.
