Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act

Colorado law (SB 24-205) requiring developers and deployers of high-risk AI systems to use reasonable care to avoid algorithmic discrimination.

Definition

The law targets AI systems that make or substantially influence consequential decisions in areas such as employment, education, lending, housing, insurance, health care, and legal services. Deployers must maintain risk management programs, conduct impact assessments, provide notices, and offer appeal; developers must provide documentation. Its effective date was delayed to 30 June 2026, and further amendments have been debated.

Example

A Colorado lender completes annual impact assessments for its AI underwriting system.

Exam tip

It is the first comprehensive US state law on algorithmic discrimination in high-risk AI.
