Coding Rate

The ratio of data bits to total transmitted bits after error-correction coding.

Definition

A coding rate such as 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, or 5/6 indicates how much redundancy FEC adds. Lower coding rates are more robust; higher rates carry more user data. Coding rate combines with modulation to define each MCS.

Example

64-QAM 5/6 is used for MCS 7.

Exam tip

5/6 coding means 5 data bits for every 6 transmitted bits.
