Coaxial Cable

A cable with a central conductor, dielectric insulator, metallic shield and outer jacket, used for cable TV, cable Internet and legacy Ethernet.

Definition

Coax's shielding provides good resistance to EMI. Modern uses include DOCSIS cable broadband and video distribution, while 10BASE5 and 10BASE2 Ethernet on coax are obsolete. Impedance is typically 75 ohms for video and broadband or 50 ohms for radio and legacy Ethernet.

Example

A cable modem connects to the ISP's network via RG-6 coax.

Exam tip

Coax + F-type connector = cable Internet and TV.
