Cloud Route Table

Set of rules in a virtual network that determines where traffic from subnets or gateways is directed.

Definition

Each route maps a destination CIDR to a target such as local, an internet gateway, NAT gateway, peering connection, transit gateway, endpoint or network appliance. In AWS, each subnet is associated with one route table and the most specific matching route wins. Azure uses system routes plus user-defined routes, and Google Cloud uses global VPC routes.

Example

A private subnet's route table sends 0.0.0.0/0 to a NAT gateway and 10.20.0.0/16 to a transit gateway.

Exam tip

Longest prefix match decides the route; a missing or incorrect route is a top cause of cloud connectivity failures.
