Cloud Misconfiguration

Incorrect or insecure setting of a cloud resource, such as public storage or overly permissive access, that creates security risk.

Definition

Misconfigurations are a leading cause of cloud data breaches and include publicly readable buckets, open management ports, disabled logging, unencrypted data, overly broad IAM permissions and exposed secrets. They arise from manual changes and default settings and are prevented and detected with guardrails, CSPM and infrastructure-as-code scanning.

Example

A storage bucket set to public read exposes customer records to the internet.

Exam tip

Under the shared responsibility model, misconfigurations are the customer's responsibility, not the provider's.
