Classification

A supervised learning task that predicts which discrete category or class an input belongs to.

Definition

Classification models output a class label, often with an associated probability. Binary classification has two classes, while multiclass and multilabel classification handle more. Typical metrics include accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score and AUC.

Example

Predicting whether a transaction is fraudulent or legitimate is binary classification.

Exam tip

If the output is a category (yes/no, type A/B/C) it is classification, even if the classes are encoded as numbers.
