Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)

Process improvement model defining maturity and capability levels from initial to optimizing.

Definition

CMMI, now maintained by ISACA, defines maturity levels 1 (Initial), 2 (Managed), 3 (Defined), 4 (Quantitatively Managed), and 5 (Optimizing). COBIT 2019 bases its process capability levels (0 to 5) on CMMI. Maturity models are used to assess and improve process consistency.

Example

An assessment finds the change management process at level 3, Defined, with documented organization-wide standards.

Exam tip

Level 4 is quantitatively managed (metrics-driven); level 5 is optimizing (continuous improvement).
