Broken Object Property Level Authorization (BOPLA)

API3:2023, failure to restrict which object properties a user can read or modify, combining excessive data exposure and mass assignment.

Definition

An API may return sensitive fields the client does not need or accept updates to fields the user should not control. Mitigations include explicit response schemas, allowlisting writable properties, avoiding generic to_json or bind-all methods and schema-based validation.

Example

A PATCH /users/me request with isAdmin:true succeeds because all properties are bound.

Exam tip

BOPLA merges the 2019 categories Excessive Data Exposure and Mass Assignment.
