Bridge

A Layer 2 device that connects network segments and forwards frames based on MAC addresses, separating collision domains.

Definition

A bridge learns MAC addresses on each port and forwards only frames destined for the other segment. Switches are essentially high-speed multiport bridges. Wireless bridges connect separate LANs over radio links.

Example

A two-port bridge separates a busy segment into two collision domains.

Exam tip

Bridges and switches break up collision domains but not broadcast domains.
