Breach and Attack Simulation (BAS)

Automated platforms that continuously run safe simulated attacks to validate whether security controls detect and block them.

Definition

BAS tools deploy agents that execute techniques mapped to MITRE ATT&CK and report which ones were prevented, detected or missed. They provide repeatable, ongoing control validation between manual tests. They complement but do not replace creative human-led pen testing.

Example

A BAS agent simulates credential dumping weekly to confirm the EDR still alerts.

Exam tip

BAS = continuous automated control validation; pen testing = point-in-time human-led exploitation.
