Bootkit

A rootkit that infects the boot process, such as the MBR, VBR or UEFI firmware, to load before the operating system.

Definition

Because a bootkit executes before the OS and its security software, it can subvert kernel protections and persist across reinstallation if firmware is infected. UEFI bootkits such as BlackLotus can bypass Secure Boot on unpatched systems. Defenses include Secure Boot, measured boot with TPM attestation and firmware updates.

Example

BlackLotus installing a malicious UEFI bootloader that disables HVCI.

Exam tip

Bootkit questions point to Secure Boot and measured boot as the preventive controls.
