Baiting

A social engineering attack that leaves an enticing item, such as an infected USB drive, for a victim to use.

Definition

Baiting relies on curiosity or greed, for example USB drives labeled "Payroll" left in a parking lot, or free downloads that carry malware. Once the device is plugged in or the file opened, malware executes. Disabling autorun and blocking removable media reduce the risk.

Example

A USB stick marked "Q3 Layoffs" dropped in the lobby installs a RAT when opened.

Exam tip

USB drop attacks are baiting; removable media controls are the technical mitigation.
