Backup as a Service (BaaS)

Cloud service that stores and manages backups offsite on provider infrastructure, often with policy-based retention.

Definition

Backup as a Service sends backup copies of servers, databases or SaaS data to a provider-managed repository. It provides offsite protection, retention policies and restore tooling without on-premises backup hardware, and often includes immutability to resist ransomware.

Example

AWS Backup applies a daily backup plan with 35-day retention across EBS volumes, RDS databases and EFS file systems.

Exam tip

BaaS protects data, but unlike DRaaS it does not by itself provide rapid workload failover; expect higher RTO.
