Autonomous Access Point

A standalone AP that contains all configuration, management, and control functions locally.

Definition

Autonomous (fat) APs are configured individually and bridge traffic directly to the wired network. They do not depend on a controller or cloud service. They suit small deployments but scale poorly because each AP must be managed separately.

Example

A small office configures a single AP through its local web interface.

Exam tip

Autonomous APs are managed one by one; lightweight APs depend on a WLC.
