Attribution

Identifying the threat actor responsible for an attack based on technical evidence, TTPs and intelligence.

Definition

Attribution is difficult because actors share tools, use false flags and route through compromised infrastructure. It relies on overlapping infrastructure, malware code, TTPs, timing and non-technical intelligence. Most organizations need only enough attribution to anticipate behavior, not legal certainty.

Example

Linking an intrusion to APT41 based on reused code-signing certificates and C2 infrastructure.

Exam tip

Attribution is not required to respond effectively; containment comes first.
