Anti-Forensics

Techniques used to hinder forensic investigation by destroying, hiding or falsifying evidence.

Definition

Examples include log clearing, timestomping, secure deletion, encryption, steganography, data hiding in slack space or alternate data streams, and memory-only execution. Detecting anti-forensic activity is itself evidence of malicious intent.

Example

An attacker running wevtutil to clear logs and SDelete to wipe tools before leaving.

Exam tip

Evidence of log clearing (Event 1102) or wiping tools is significant even when the original data is gone.
