Aggregate Function

A function that computes one value from a set of rows, such as SUM, AVG, COUNT, MIN, MAX, STDDEV or LISTAGG.

Definition

Aggregates collapse rows into a single result per group. Most ignore NULLs. When used with OVER(), the same functions become window functions that do not collapse rows.

Example

SELECT DeptID, AVG(Salary), MAX(Salary) FROM Employees GROUP BY DeptID;

Exam tip

AVG ignores NULLs, so AVG(col) can differ from SUM(col)/COUNT(*).
