Absorption

Conversion of RF energy into heat as a signal passes through a material.

Definition

Absorption is the most common cause of attenuation indoors. Water, human bodies, concrete, and dense materials absorb significant RF energy. Absorption reduces amplitude but does not change frequency or wavelength.

Example

A crowded auditorium absorbs more 5 GHz energy than the same room empty.

Exam tip

Water and people are strong absorbers; design capacity coverage assuming an occupied room.
