Training dataLabeled input-output pairsUnlabeled dataNo fixed dataset, feedback from environment
GoalPredict labels or valuesDiscover patterns, groups, structureLearn a policy that maximizes reward
Typical tasksClassification, regressionClustering, dimensionality reduction, anomaly detectionGame playing, robotics, RLHF for LLMs
Example algorithmsLinear/logistic regression, random forest, SVMK-means, PCA, DBSCANQ-learning, policy gradients, PPO
Example usePredict house prices, detect spamCustomer segmentationOptimize warehouse robot routes
Remember it

Supervised has an answer key, unsupervised has none, reinforcement has a scoreboard.

Exam tip

Look for the word 'labeled': labeled means supervised. Grouping customers with no predefined categories is unsupervised clustering. RLHF is how many chat models are aligned.
